ANALYSIS: Nobody was expecting a lot from Tre'Quan Smith came Week 1 and that is precisely what he did, a bunch of nothing. Smith was targeted just once, and although the caught that lone pass he finished with just four yards even though he was part of 44 snaps (Michael Thomas led the offense with 55). Then, Michael Thomas injured his ankle and is expected to miss between two and four weeks.

The impact of Thomas' injury could be seen this past Monday: Smith got to play the WR1 role over Emmanuel Sanders, led the Saints receivers in targets with seven (only RB Alvin Kamara had more; nine), finished with the most catches among New Orleans' receivers with five, and reached 86 yards that, again, only trailed Kamara's 95. All in all, he posted a 13.6 PPR game in what could very well be his average at least for the next few weeks while Thomas remains out.
After facing the 14th- and 15th-best defenses against the position, the Saints will go against Green Bay in Week 3 with the Packers having allowed the 23rd-most fantasy points to wideouts so far this year. That makes Smith an even more appealing target this week, even in not-so-deep leagues. He's got the potential to finish as a WR2 and should be considered a WR3/FLEX starter without a doubt next weekend.
