Edwin Diaz Picks Up Fourth Save
4 years agoNew York Mets right-handed relief pitcher Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless inning of work on Wednesday picking up his fourth save of the season in the Mets' 5-4 win against the Phillies. For the second night in a row, Diaz stuck out the side in his lone inning of work. He allowed only a two-out single to Alec Bohm in his appearance. Diaz, who has had difficulties in the closer role dating back to 2019, including converting only four saves in seven opportunities this season, has been virtually unhittable of late. Notwithstanding his issues in the closer role where control issues including a BB% of 11.4 have hurt him, Diaz is posting elite numbers otherwise. He ranks in the top 1% in all of baseball in strikeout percentage (51.1%), whiff rate, xBA (.138), xSLG (.222), and xERA (1.88). With 45 strikeouts in just 21 innings pitched to go with a 1.71 ERA, Diaz remains an elite relief option in all formats who can also contribute in the saves department down the stretch.
