Martin Truex Jr. Dominates, Fails To Close At Darlington
4 years agoJoe Gibbs Racing's Martin Truex Jr. ended Sunday night's Cook Out Southern 500 in a disappointing 22nd place, after having the car to beat. Truex started in sixth and first took the lead on lap 86. From there on, Truex dominated, winning both stages and leading the field for 196 of the 367 laps. After a late caution went against the No. 19's pit strategy, Truex had to work his way back to the front. Battling for the lead with just 15 laps to go, Truex pushed it too hard under Chase Elliott, into turn one, and both drivers smacked the wall. Truex would try to stay out, but the damage from the contact cut his tire down and ended his hopes of winning. Truex will go into Richmond 16 points above the playoff cut line.
