The Pittsburgh Pirates have nabbed outfielder Anthony Alford off of waivers after he was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays earlier in the week. Long regarded as one of Toronto’s top prospects, Alford may get a chance at playing time in a Pittsburgh outfield that is desperately seeking some offensive punch. In sporadic Major League action, Alford has compiled a .155/.200/.254 slash line for his career, a far cry from his Minor League production. With stolen base potential also in his wheelhouse, Alford may have some instant DFS appeal should he join the Pirates’ starting nine in the short term.--Jesse Borek

The Cleveland Guardians signed outfielder Anthony Alford to a minor league deal on Tuesday and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus. The third-round pick out of Ole Miss in 2012 has split his major league career between the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old rejected an outright assignment by the Pirates and became a free agent on April 24, and now he'll become organizational depth for the Guardians. Alford had one hit in four at-bats over two games for the Bucs this year, and he slashed .233/.311/.406 with five home runs, 11 RBI and five stolen bases in 49 games for Pittsburgh in 2021. He has only eight home runs and a .209 career average in six major league seasons.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Anthony Alford (wrist) from the 10-day injured list on Friday. In a corresponding move, infielder Hoy Park was optioned to Triple-A. Alford suffered a right wrist sprain during Spring Training and began the season on the injured list. While rehabbing the injury, he played five games at Triple-A and went 5-for-15 with three home runs. The 27-year-old should see a good amount of playing time this year. Last season, he appeared in 49 games for the Pirates and slashed .233/.311/.406 with five home runs, five stolen bases, 11 RBI and 14 runs.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Anthony Alford (wrist) was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on April 16 with Single-A Bradenton, and medical director Todd Tomczyk said on April 13 that Alford had resumed all baseball hitting activities with minimal to no symptoms. Relief pitcher Luis Oviedo (ankle), meanwhile, will move from Bradenton to Double-A Altoona to continue his rehab assignment. Oviedo didn't give up a run over 2 1/3 innings at Bradenton, but he did walk three batters and hit another. Alford began the year on the injured list, but he could join the Pirates this week as a platoon outfielder. Oviedo sprained his right ankle in spring training, but he, too, could rejoin Pittsburgh sometime this week.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
