Emilio Pagan Grabs Save In Padres Win On Friday
4 years agoSan Diego Padres relief pitcher Emilio Pagan picked up his first save of the season by working a scoreless ninth inning in the Padres' 4-3 win over Houston on Friday. With Drew Pomeranz (shoulder) on the injured list, Pagan was called upon to close out the contest. On the season, Pagan has been underwhelming after posting career-best numbers with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019, including 20 saves. In 2020, Pagan has a 6.75 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, four blown saves and 10 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. With Pomeranz out, the Padres will likely institute a closer-by-committee until his return. That said, with Pagan getting first crack at successfully converting a save on Friday, it is likely Pagan leads the pack which includes Adrian Morejon and Craig Stammen. Though he has struggled this season, the fact Pagan saved 20 games with the Rays in 2019 also gives him a leg up on the committee competition. Owners in need of saves should give Pagan a look since he could serve to be useful before Pomeranz returns from the IL.
