St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez has been given the green light to return and begin doing baseball activities following his bout with COVID-19. Manager Mike Shildt was not able to announce Martinez’s timetable as of Monday, which likely indicates that he is a ways off from returning to a big league mound. Martinez was hit hard in his lone start this season, having yielding six runs across 3 ⅔ frames with the team attempting to get him back into the starting rotation. Whether getting that ramped up in such a short window is attainable remains to be seen, so owners will want to check back for an update when the Cardinals have a clearer picture of his outlook.--Jesse Borek

The Boston Red Sox have released veteran right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez. The 30-year-old had signed a minor league deal with the team just a few weeks back. He made two starts at Triple-A and allowed nine hits, three walks and 10 earned runs over 4.1 innings. Martinez spent nine years in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals. Last year, he made 16 starts and went 4-9 with a 6.23 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. We'll see if another team is willing to take a chance on Martinez, who was a two-time All-Star for the Cardinals back in 2015 and 2017.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller

Free-agent right-hander Carlos Martinez (thumb) signed a minor-league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. He agreed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants during the offseason but was released in late April. The 30-year-old posted a 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts over 82 1/3 innings for the Cardinals in 2021. After struggling most of the last two seasons, Martinez will look to join the big league roster with a 6.95 ERA. Fantasy managers can leave Martinez on the waiver wire.--Brad Camara - RotoBaller

Free-agent right-hander Carlos Martinez agreed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night, according to a source. The deal will be worth $2.5 million if Martinez makes the major league roster and includes $1.5 million in incentives. The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched well in the last two seasons, and he went 4-9 with a 6.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 16 starts (82 1/3 innings) for the St. Louis Cardinals last year while striking out 57 and walking 36. Martinez's season ended in late July when he tore a ligament in his right thumb. The 30-year-old Dominican also has some relief experience (31 career saves in nine MLB seasons), so the Giants could decide to use him in relief if he struggles as a starter.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter and pitcher Carlos Martinez each had their options declined by the club. This was a foregone conclusion in each case, as Carpenter has slashed just .176/.313/.291 with a 29.9 percent strikeout rate since the start of 2020, and Martinez was responsible for a 6.95 ERA in the same time frame. They will be paid buyouts of $2 million and $500 thousand dollars, respectively. While it's likely that each will latch on somewhere in 2022, neither needs to be drafted by fantasy managers to start the season regardless of where they end up.--Doug Goldring
