San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler says it’s “on the table” that pitcher Luis Patino could enter the starting rotation. Patino was called up on Tuesday and will initially work out of the bullpen, but as one of the most talented pitching prospects in the league, he may force the Padres hand if he reaches his potential. The 20-year-old dominated High-A and Double-A in 2019 in which he recorded a 2.57 ERA with 123 strikeouts in just 94 2/3 innings. Patino has to potential be one of the best pitchers in the game, but at just age 20 he should be picked up in all formats with the understanding that owners should be patient.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

The San Diego Padres have non-tendered right-handed pitcher Luis Patino, according to the team. Patino underwent Tommy John surgery last April, which will sideline him for likely the entire first half of the 2025 campaign. In 2023, Patino logged 21 2/3 innings to the tune of a 4.57 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Patino has bounced between both the rotation and bullpen throughout his major league career. He logged a career-high in innings (77 1/3) during the 2021 season and held a 4.31 and a 1.27 WHIP during this campaign. Fantasy managers in deeper formats should monitor Patino's progression while he recovers from Tommy John, as he could have a path to operating as a starting pitcher during the second half of the 2025 campaign with his new club.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

San Diego Padres relief pitchers Wandy Peralta and Luis Patino are both dealing with visa issues as pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training. Padres manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Sunday about the visa issues for the two aforementioned arms but did not expand beyond that. It's a fairly common issue with foreign players and it should be sorted out soon enough to give Peralta and Patino plenty of time to ramp up for the regular season. Peralta is coming off an excellent season with the New York Yankees in which he registered a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 51:30 K/BB ratio to go along with four saves over 54 innings of relief. Patino, who started his professional career with the Padres, was optioned by the Rays last season before being traded to the Chicago White Sox for cash. The Sox designated him for assignment back in December before the Padres claimed him off waivers. He hasn't shown much in the majors so far (5.02 ERA, 1.496 WHIP in 136 1/3 career innings) but is still just 24 years old. Both players have a shot to contribute to the San Diego bullpen this season.--Jon Mathisen - RotoBaller

Right-hander Luis Patino was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Patino was released earlier in the week by the Chicago White Sox. The former top prospect threw 21 2/3 innings last season, compiling a 4.57 ERA and 5.33 FIP. Patino was formerly with the Rays and was a big piece of the trade that sent Blake Snell to San Diego. The 24-year-old made one start in 2023 and has started 23 of the 45 games he has appeared in during his career. Overall, he's been a highly ineffective pitcher in the majors and there is no reason to roster him in most fantasy formats.--Justin Raffone - RotoBaller

The Chicago White Sox have designated right-hander Luis Patino for assignment. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of right-hander Josimar Cousin from Double-A Birmingham. It's been a significant fall from grace for Patino, a former top prospect with the San Diego Padres. The highly-touted righty was moved to the Tampa Bay Rays as a headliner in the 2020 Blake Snell trade and while he tossed a decent 4.31 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) with the Rays in 2021, he was tattooed for an 8.10 ERA in 20 innings for the club in the 2022 campaign. The 24-year-old split the 2023 season between the White Sox and Rays, working to a 4.57 ERA in nine appearances (one start) but also posted a 5.33 FIP and a 5.36 SIERA while walking a hefty 14.1% of the batters he faced a season ago.--Brenton Kemp
