Indians Sign Joe Donovan, Cade Smith
4 years agoThe Cleveland Indians agreed to terms with Michigan catcher Joe Donovan and Hawaii right-handed pitcher Cade Smith following the conclusion of the 2020 MLB draft last week. Due to the shortened draft this year, all 30 teams may sign an unlimited number of high school and college players who went undrafted for a maximum of $20,000 each. Donovan was taken in the 33rd round by the Cubs out of high school in 2017. He started 80 games behind the plate in just over two seasons at Michigan and has above-average arm strength. Donovan hit .234 with a .735 OPS, nine homers, 37 RBI and 12 doubles to earn All-Big Ten third-team honors in 2019. Smith was selected in the 16th round by the Twins in 2017. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder worked mostly out of the bullpen in college, making 34 appearances (15 starts) over two-plus seasons.
