Aroldis Chapman Expected To Make Spring Debut Friday
5 years agoNew York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman had been scheduled to make his spring debut on Wednesday, but the 32-year-old has had his debut pushed back to Friday. The Yankees opted to have Chapman throw a bullpen session on Wednesday instead of entering the game against the Phillies, and the team insists that Chapman is fully healthy. Chapman was dominant again in 2019 with a 2.21 ERA and 37 saves, but his maximum velocity dipped two mph to 102 mph, and his average velocity dropped to 98 mph. Given how the Yankees have reported injuries lately, it’s worth monitoring Chapman’s health for the rest of the week. If healthy, Chapman should again be a top fantasy closer, though his declining fastball velocity suggests that he’s likely entering the back end of his career.
