Franklin Barreto Has Chance To Win Second Base Job
5 years agoOakland Athletics second baseman Franklin Barreto has a real chance to make the team's Opening Day roster as the starter at second base after previously being blocked by Jurickson Profar and Jed Lowrie. “There’s not one particular guy in front of him right now. This is his best shot,” manager Bob Melvin said. The 23-year-old was seen as the second baseman of the future years ago, but he's now out of minor league options, meaning the A's would have to put him on waivers if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster. Barreto arrived to camp having added muscle and is ready for the challenge. He'll be battling with Jorge Mateo, Sheldon Neuse, Tony Kemp and Vimael Machin. Barreto could be useful middle infield insurance in deep mixed leagues, but he'll be a nice target in AL-only leagues if he seized the position outright this spring.
