Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said over the weekend that he'd like to split up right-handers
Zack Wheeler and
Aaron Nola in the starting rotation this year and also do the same with left-handers
Cristopher Sanchez and
Jesus Luzardo. It could result in an opening-week rotation of Wheeler, Sanchez, Nola, Luzardo and left-hander
Ranger Suarez. In addition, right-hander
Joe Ross will be built up as a starter in spring training in case an injury pops up. If the Phillies' top five starters are healthy going into Opening Day, Ross will open up in the bullpen in a relief role. Ross had a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings of relief in 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers. Thomson said he'd be comfortable using Ross as a multi-inning reliever or in one-inning stints in more high-leverage roles.

The Philadelphia Phillies will turn to right-handed pitcher
Aaron Nola for their National League Division Series Game 3 clash with the Mets on Tuesday. He will be opposed by
Sean Manaea. This will be the 31-year-old's first appearance of the 2024 postseason. However, he owns a career 5-3 record with a 3.70 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and a 24.9% strikeout rate in nine post-season starts. Nola had a nice regular season, compiling a 3.57 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and a 24.0% strikeout rate in 33 starts and 199 1/3 IP. He had mixed success against the Mets in his two regular-season starts against them, tossing a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts in his first game and allowing six runs in 4 1/3 IP in his second matchup. This makes him a dubious fantasy start against a Mets offense that has scored the most runs of any team so far in the playoffs.

Aaron Nola came up clutch in Monday's 6-2 win over the Cubs, sealing the National League East division title. Nola pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. The 31-year-old has been a solid fantasy option overall this season, going 13-8 with a 3.52 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and an 8.80 K/9 rate in 32 starts and 194 1/3 IP. He has turned in some inconsistent starts throughout the season and his strikeout rate has declined over each of the last four seasons. However, Nola has turned in good numbers overall in a rebound season. He is currently in line to start the final game of the season at the Nationals, but fantasy managers should keep an eye out for news as the game gets closer. They should ensure that Nola will still make the start, given that the Phillies have now won their division.

Aaron Nola improved to 12-6 in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Astros. Nola turned in another great start, pitching seven innings with four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The 31-year-old has followed his recent strong-season/down-season trend, compiling a 3.30 ERA, an 8.28 K/9 rate, and a 2.27 BB/9 rate in 27 starts (17 quality starts) and 166 1/3 IP this season. He will face a tougher matchup against the division-rival Braves in his next start, but fantasy managers should feel confident in starting him in any matchup down the stretch based on his season performance.
