Scott Oberg (RP, COL) - Week 15 Waiver Wire Pickups

Brady Grove profiles Colorado Rockies reliever Scott Oberg as a potential waiver wire acquisition of value for fantasy baseball leagues in Week 15 of the 2019 MLB campaign.

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues

OWNED IN: 29% of leagues

ANALYSIS: Wade Davis has lately been struggling tremendously, prompting talks to arise that he may soon he removed from the closer role for the Colorado Rockies. If the Rockies are trying to win, they should probably opt to deploy Scott Oberg in the highest leverage situations, because he has been absolutely unconscious this season in a way that few have managed to do when pitching in Coors Field. In the 16.2 IP he's seen since the start of June, he holds a 0.54 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, while tallying 24 strikeouts, two saves, with just four walks, and a single home run allowed.

As far as following a formula for success when you call the Rocky Mountains your home turf, Oberg has been perfectly on point for the entirety of 2019. He has walked batters at an elevated percentage this year, but he has also bumped up his strikeout rate to a robust 27.9%, but most important is how he has limited the long ball inside Coors Field and out. The five-year Colorado staple has forced opponents into hitting grounders at a dirt-heavy 50% clip as well as a 24.5% soft contact rate, while only allowing hard contact at a stagnant 28.4%. With the end product being a 0.6 HR/9 figure on the season, Scott Oberg has eliminated much of the danger of a park that lives in the nightmares of many big league arms. By clearly leading the way for the Colorado bullpen as far as performance is concerned, he could see a big increase in save opportunities after the All-Star break.
