Carolina Hurricanes forward Saku Maenalanen (hand) needed corrective surgery for a hand injury suffered in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Islanders and he is expected to miss at least 10 to 14 days. He is expected to miss the remainder of the semifinals and a good chunk of the Conference Finals should the Canes advance. Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (shoulder) is out for Game 3 after a hard hit in Sunday's game, and all indications are that he will be out a while. He'll be re-evaluated by doctors on Tuesday. Haydn Fleury is expected to draw in for TVR.--Daniel Dobish

Washington Capitals defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (upper body) left Game 3 against the New York Rangers on Friday after taking a massive hit from Matt Rempe. The hit was called for interference but was only given a two-minute penalty. It seemed to be a grey area hit, with fans of the Rangers arguing that it was clean while Capitals fans thought it deserved more than just a two-minute call. Either way, van Riemsdyk appears to be in danger of missing Game 4, which could be the last game of the Capitals season if things don't turn around.--Matt Garon - RotoBaller

Washington Capitals forward Anthony Mantha (ear) and defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (lower body) are both expected to return from injury for Saturday's contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Mantha has missed the last three games after suffering a ruptured left ear drum after being struck by a shot in a Nov. 8 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers, while van Riemsdyk has missed the last four contests with a lower-body injury sustained in a game against the Blue Jackets on Nov. 4. The 29-year-old Mantha has three goals and four points in 10 games but notched a pair of goals against the Panthers before being injured. For his part, the defense-first van Riemsdyk has recorded one assist in 10 games with 19 blocked shots as part of his 17:35 of average ice time per game.--Brenton Kemp

Washington Capitals defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (lower body) will miss his second straight game on Friday against the Devils and presumably another on Saturday night against the New York Islanders after not traveling with the club for the two-game road trip. The 32-year-old was injured early in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets and remains day-to-day at this point. van Riemsdyk has skated in 10 games for the Capitals this season, recording one assist along with 19 blocked shots while averaging 17:35 of ice time per game, although the latter is skewed by skating just 1:34 on Saturday before getting injured. Through 541 career NHL games, van Riemsdyk has notched 24 goals and 113 points while blocking a hefty 839 shots in that time.--Brenton Kemp

Washington Capitals defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk suffered an apparent hand injury in Sunday's preseason game against Buffalo. He left the contest late in the third period after blocking a shot with his right hand. The 32-year-old tallied an assist in 18:30 of action before exiting. The Capitals, who lost the game 4-3 in a shootout, will re-evaluate van Riemsdyk on Monday. Van Riemsdyk is preparing for his third full season with the Capitals. He posted a career-high 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 75 games last term.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
