ANALYSIS: Renato Nunez has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles and a shocking sight for the Athletics and Rangers. He spent the first eight years in Oakland before being discarded and picked up by the Rangers, who subsequently did the same thing after mediocre performances.
Nunez has always demonstrated power and 2019 is no exception. In 85 at-bats, he has five homers and a team-leading 16 RBI. He combines that with a .294 batting average. If his career .259 batting average is any indication, the AVG will not sustain, but even a .260 average is a welcome sight when it comes with the package of power and Camden Yards. Nunez' average exit velocity of 92.6 ranks 38th and his 31 hard-hit balls are tied for 18th-most in the majors.
Nunez has two more games at home against the White Sox followed by three games in Minnesota this week where he’ll see four righties and one lefty. The matchups aren’t difficult minus one game against Jose Berrios. Not surprisingly, Nunez has already hit a homer against him in just three at-bats. While he will likely find success against the one lefty, Martin Perez (two homers in six at-bats), his .268 against right-handed pitching this year is assuring enough for him to start daily in hopes of adding to your team’s HR total. Be aware that he does come with his fair share of strikeouts (24%).
