Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Cesar Hernandez is getting the day off on Monday against Anibal Sanchez and the Washington Nationals. Hernandez has a middling .179 average with four RBI and a stolen base through eight games. Scott Kingery draws into the lineup at second base and will bat seventh. Kingery has no hits and one walk through five plate appearances through the early portion of the season. He is a fantasy afterthought with no clear path to playing time.--Raymond Harrison - RotoBaller

The Detroit Tigers granted second baseman Cesar Hernandez his release on Tuesday. Hernandez wasn't going to make the team's Opening Day roster, so he asked for and was granted his release after hitting .234 (11-for-47) with seven doubles, four RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in 19 Grapefruit League games with the team this spring. The 32-year-old veteran will most likely have to settle for a minor-league deal with another team to open the 2023 campaign. He spent the 2022 campaign with the Washington Nationals and hit .248/.311/.318 with a .629 OPS, one home run, 34 RBI, 64 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 617 plate appearances and 147 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Per a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Wednesday, veteran infielder Cesar Hernandez has reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Heyman tweeted the following on Wednesday: "Cesar Hernandez agrees to minors deal with Tigers. Invited to MLB camp." Hernandez hit .248 in 617 plate appearances for the Washington Nationals last year, adding a home run and 10 stolen bases in the process. Capable of playing second base, third base, and left field he'll give the Tigers some additional infield depth heading into the 2023 season.--Ben Rosener - RotoBaller

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he'd love for second baseman Cesar Hernandez to be his leadoff hitter this season. It would be a curious placement for the 31-year-old switch-hitter, who had a .308 on-base percentage in 637 plate appearances with the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox in 2021. Hernandez has gotten on base at a .345 slip in his nine seasons in the big leagues, but he hasn't run much since 2018 -- just 11 stolen bases in the last three years. He had a career-high 21 long balls and drove in 62 last year, and a move to the top of the order in front of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Nelson Cruz would certainly be a boost to his modest fantasy appeal.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Washington Nationals are signing free-agent second baseman Cesar Hernandez to a one-year, $4 million deal on Tuesday evening. The deal will include $1 million in incentives. Hernandez became a free agent when the Chicago White Sox didn't pick up his $6 million option for the 2022 season. The switch-hitting second baseman had just a .299 slugging percentage after being acquired in a trade from Cleveland. In total, the 31-year-old hit just .232/.309/.299 in 53 games for the White Sox with three home runs and 15 RBI in 217 plate appearances. Hernandez totaled a career-high 21 home runs, 62 RBI and 84 runs scored in 149 total games with Cleveland and Chicago, though, and he'll provide some solid pop at the keystone for the Nats next season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
