As Expected, Peter Alonso Makes Mets Roster
6 years agoIn a move that was widely expected, the New York Mets named rookie first baseman Peter Alonso to their Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old hit .368 in 21 spring games over the past month, driving in 11 runs and stealing 11 bases. The Mets could have kept Alonso in the minors a little longer for service time considerations, but instead opted to simply take their 25 best players into the new season. Alonso should get the nod at first base for now, but could very well win the job outright even after injuries to Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie heal. The Tampa native is coming off an incredible 2018 season, smashing 36 home runs and driving in 119 RBI between Double-A and Triple-A.
