Madison Bumgarner Finishes Up Bumpy Spring
6 years agoSan Francisco Giants starter Madison Bumgarner did little to quiet the critics during the spring, allowing 35 hits in only 20 2/3 innings with a 8.27 ERA. Of course, reading too deeply into exhibition numbers for a veteran like Bumgarner could be a fatal fantasy mistake. But the 29-year-old southpaw has made only 38 starts over the past two seasons and posted his highest WHIP last season (1.24) since 2010. His velocity was down at times last season and it is fair to question whether Bumgarner can get back to the elite status in fantasy that he enjoyed from 2012 to 2016. Fantasy owners need to proceed with caution when drafting Bumgarner and not be seduced by his past reputation.
