Washington Nationals closer Sean Doolittle (toe) said that he felt Sunday's simulated game was an improvement over Friday's, per the Washington Post's Chelsea Janes. Doolittle has been out since the beginning of July with left toe inflammation, and while he said his foot felt fine today, nothing was mentioned about next steps for recovery. With injuries plaguing the Nationals bullpen, it looks like Justin Miller may be the guy to own until either Doolittle or Kelvin Herrera return to the team.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

Left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle announced his retirement from professional baseball on his Twitter account on Friday. Doolittle didn't pitch at all in the majors in 2023 and made just six relief appearances in 2022 for the Washington Nationals due to elbow and knee injuries. He was originally a first-round pick (41st overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2007 out of the University of Virginia, and he spent 11 years in the majors pitching for the A's, Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners. The 36-year-old southpaw made the All-Star team twice, first in 2014 with the A's and again in 2018 with the Nats. Doolittle finishes a fine career with a 3.20 ERA (2.94 FIP), 1.01 WHIP, 112 saves and 522 strikeouts in 450 2/3 relief innings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) has moved his minor-league rehab assignment from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw is attempting to return from an internal-brace surgery on his left elbow, and so far he's allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out 10 in seven relief innings for High-A Wilmington, Single-A Fredericksburg and Harrisburg. He last pitched in 2022 for the Nats but only pitched in 5 1/3 innings before being shut down with injury. Doolittle should eventually provide veteran depth in Washington's bullpen in the second half of the season, but he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy option at this stage of his career.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Washington Nationals outfielder Corey Dickerson (calf) traveled with the team to Colorado and is taking light swings but not running yet. Relief pitcher Sean Doolittle (elbow) continues to throw off flat ground but hasn't gotten back on a mound yet. Dickerson was put on the 10-day injured list after straining his left calf last Saturday, and he's unlikely to be activated when he's eligible to return next week. In Dickerson's absence, Alex Call is seeing more playing time in left field. Doolittle had surgery last July to fix a partially torn UCL in his left elbow, and we're unlikely to see him in the big leagues until at least sometime in May.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Washington Nationals relief pitchers Sean Doolittle (elbow) and Tanner Rainey (elbow) will return to Florida to continue their respective elbow rehabs after the 2023 regular season begins. Doolittle is a little further along than Rainey, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. "He's building up strength, he's throwing," manager Dave Martinez said of Doolittle. "Actually he's throwing the ball really well. So hopefully we get him back soon. He's gonna go back and I think pretty soon he'll be throwing off the mound. But he's throwing the ball well. So I wanted him here. He's been through this before. He's gonna go to the (Homecoming) Gala with us. And I told him to stick around for Opening Day him and Rainey both. So they're going to be around for Opening Day and then they're going to take off and go back to Florida."--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
