Lions Starters Dreadful Friday Night
6 years agoMaking his season debut, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford completed just two of five passes for 51 yards and was sacked twice over his three series of play. Poor offensive line play negated any production out of the key skill position players. It didn't help that running back Ameer Abdullah started the game with his trademark fumbling ability on the second play of the night, and followed that up later on by muffing a kick return. Lions second-rounder Kerryon Johnson wasn't able to get much going either with the first unit, where all running backs consistently faced defensive linemen in the backfield. Even after Stafford was pulled, the O-line starters remained in through the first half -- a telling sign that the coaches are aware this unit needs as many repetitions as possible before the regular season is underway. All signs continue to point toward a Johnson-LeGarrette Blount timeshare with Theo Riddick sprinkled in on third downs, making this a fantasy quagmire where all of them will be difficult to rely on week to week. Meanwhile, Abdullah's stock is trending toward non-existent.
