Vince Velasquez Let Off Hook By Offense
6 years agoThrough the first two innings of Wednesday night’s home game against the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies starter Vince Velasquez appeared to be heading towards a positive start. Successfully overcoming runners on base in each of the first two frames, he was undone by a stressful third inning that all began when he walked the opposing starting pitcher with one out. After that, he drilled a batter and later surrendered a double with the bases loaded, putting him down three runs. With his pitch count way up, manager Gabe Kapler saw enough, ending Velasquez’s night with just 2 1/3 innings of work. While the Phillies would go on to win the game, Velasquez put forth a performance the likes of which he’s come to routinely deliver. His season record remains 8-9, while his ERA now stands at 4.13 on the season.
