7 years agoMinnesota Twins starting pitcher Kyle Gibson took the mound later than expected on Thursday, but if it affected him, he sure didn't pitch like it. While Tampa Bay Rays starter Blake Snell barely lasted three innings after a two-hour rain delay, Gibson was absolutely dominant through eight innings. He got into one jam the entire game — in the very first inning — before breezing through the Rays lineup the rest of his outing. The Rays had come into Thursday's matchup averaging over six runs a game during a five-game win streak. Gibson shut all that down during the course of eight innings where he allowed one run on five hits, struck out nine and walked none. The veteran is now sporting a 3.42 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP, and with the trade deadline nearing he's definitely raised his value. Fantasy players might do well to grab Gibson off the waiver wire before the All-Star break — if he's still available.--Mauricio Castillo

1 week agoThe Baltimore Orioles agreed to terms on a one-year major-league deal with free-agent right-hander Kyle Gibson on Friday and placed right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow) on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move to make room for Gibson on the 40-man roster. Gibson's deal is for $5.25 million and will give Baltimore some more starting depth entering the 2025 season with Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells and Bradish all opening the year on the injured list with elbow issues. The 37-year-old veteran could get some decent run in the team's rotation eventually, which could make him worth pursuing in AL-only formats. Gibson spent the 2023 season in Baltimore before going 8-8 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 151 K's and 68 walks in 30 starts for the Cardinals in 2024. There's not much upside, but Gibson could have some streaming appeal in DFS back in Baltimore.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoFree agent right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson has been drawing interest from several clubs. According to Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney, interest for Gibson has begun to increase due to the recent string of pitcher injuries. The Yankees lost two of their starters (Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat)), the Mariners could be without George Kirby (shoulder) and Baltimore's Grayson Rodriguez (elbow) will open the season on the injured list. Gibson has continued to throw regularly and would not need much time to build up. Last season, Gibson spent his entire season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Across 169 2/3 innings, the 37-year-old had a 4.24 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP. He tallied 151 punchouts and held a high 9.4 percent walk rate. If Gibson were to find a suitor, he will only carry value in deeper formats given his low strikeout upside.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoFree-agent right-hander Kyle Gibson is throwing in simulated settings and still plans to pitch in 2025, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports. Gibson ha reached 60 pitches over three innings while throwing live batting practice to college teams. The 37-year-old veteran has averaged around 180 innings per year over the last four seasons and could be worth a flier late this spring for a team that has questions surrounding their starting-pitching depth. He became a free agent when the St. Louis Cardinals declined his $12 million club option for the 2025 season back in October. Gibson has made 30-plus starts in each of the last three seasons but doesn't have much fantasy upside, as he's posted a 4.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with a below-average 20.1% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate in 529 1/3 innings. At best, Gibson would be a low-upside DFS streamer if he signs with a team and finds a starting role in 2025.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

5 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitchers Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn had their club options declined and will be headed to free agency. Gibson logged 169 1/3 innings in his debut season in St. Louis with a 8-8 record, 4.24 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a 68:151 BB:K ratio. Lynn posted a 3.84 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP with a 7-4 record across 117 1/3 innings last season. Both remained in the starting rotation the entire season. In the same move, the Cardinals also declined the 2025 club option for pitcher Kenyan Middleton. Middleton logged only five innings in the minor leagues this season due to a forearm injury. This transaction allows the Cardinals to trim substantial payroll off of their pitching staff. Currently, the Cardinals rotation consists of Miles Mikolas, Erick Fedde, Sonny Gray, Andre Pallante, and Michael McGreevy.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
