Andreas Athanasiou Sticks with Red Wings on Two-Year Pact
6 years agoThe Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Andreas Athanasiou to a two-year deal. The speedy forward is coming off of a career-high 33 points in 71 games last season, a season in which he got off to a slow start due in part to contract negotiations that lingered into the start of Detroit's schedule. Over his three-year career, Athanasiou has produced at a steady rate of just under a point per game, scoring 76 points in 172 games, but he has improved his shot rates each year, ultimately reaching 2.4 shots per game last year. If Athanasiou can continue this climb, then he could approach 40 points in a season for the first time in his career. At this point in his development, the Red Wings have not settled on whether he should be a winger or a center, but for now his dual-position eligibility gives his fantasy value a slight bump. With the right deployment, Athanasiou could become an under-the-radar streaming option.
