Matt Martin Returns to New York, Traded to the Islanders
6 years agoThe New York Islanders have acquired forward Matt Martin from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for goaltender Eamon McAdam. Martin returns to New York where he has played all but two years of his nine-year NHL career and reunites with general manager Lou Lamoriello, who had brought him to Toronto. Well known for his physicality, Martin failed to reach 300 hits last year for only the second time in which he has played at least 50 games in a season. He also had the lowest penalty-minute total of his career outside of his rookie season, logging only 50 minutes in the box. His role with the Islanders should resemble what it was before he left -- a physical forward that contributes little to the score sheet -- averaging 14.3 points per season while with the Islanders, but he offers top-end value in hits and penalty minutes. If your league counts hits and penalty minutes, Martin is worth watching, but otherwise he holds little fantasy value.
