Sabres Acquire Conor Sheary, Matt Hunwick From Penguins
6 years agoThe Buffalo Sabres acquired winger Conor Sheary and defenseman Matt Hunwick in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2019 NHL draft on Wednesday. After posting 53 points (23 goals, 30 assists) in 2016-2017, Sheary slipped down the Penguins lineup last season and his production consequently dropped as well (18 goals, 12 assists). Hunwick, a 33-year-old depth defenseman, recorded 10 points (four goals, six assists), 51 hits and 53 blocked shots in 42 games with the Penguins in 2017-2018. Considering the light return, this move is likely one made by the Penguins to clear salary cap space with Sheary and Hunwick on the book for $3 million and $2.25 million each, respectively, for the next two seasons. Sheary, depending on where he fits in the Sabres lineup next season, could be an interesting play in deep fantasy leagues.
