Sam Darnold An Option To Start In Week 1
7 years agoNew York Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said that rookie quarterback Sam Darnold is in the running to be the Week 1 starter. “Are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him? We’re throwing everything at him,” Bates said Wednesday. “If he can handle it, if he can prove that he’s the starter, then that will take place when the time comes.” Head coach Todd Bowles has been impressed with "his learning." While it certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see Darnold beat out Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, Darnold is also the youngest rookie QB in the league and the Jets could take it slow with him. If Darnold is starting right off the bat, he'll surely have his ups and downs at the next level, making him a project as a QB2 in redraft leagues.
