ANALYSIS: Houston Astros catcher Max Stassi has been tearing the cover off the ball all season (.303/.367/.562 in 89 AB) and will finally get a chance for more playing time. He will get a chance to take over behind the plate for the next week or so as Brian McCann occupies a spot on the disabled list.
Stassi’s specialty is crushing lefthanders; while he has four of his five homers against righties, he is 16-of-32 against lefties with a 1.324 OPS. Considering that McCann is left-handed, there is a good chance that the Astros platoon their two catchers once McCann is healthy.
McCann is not exactly a spring chicken either, so Stassi should continue to see some starts even after the veteran backstop returns. As of now, Stassi would be a great option as a starting catcher in deeper leagues as long as McCann is out.
