Robert Gsellman Picks Up Save For Mets
7 years agoWith the fledgling New York Mets nursing a two-run lead in the eighth inning and the best hitters in the Atlanta Braves lineup coming up, the team opted to use normal closer Jeurys Familia in the frame to stay on top. That means they needed someone else to close things out in the ninth, and on Wednesday that someone was Robert Gsellman. En route to his second save of the year -- but first in a situation where Familia was available -- Gsellman threw a scoreless final inning on 13 pitches. Normally, we wouldn’t think much of it. But because manager Mickey Callaway said during spring training he would play the matchups for the later innings, which he hasn’t done until now, plus admitting that as the reason for Familia pitching the eighth, there could be something here. We wouldn’t jump on this wholeheartedly just yet, though. Let’s see it play out more before making any rash moves. For now, Gsellman remains a solid player in holds leagues, but obviously he could take on value outside of that if this continues.
