7 years agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Martin Perez has inflammation in his right arm. The left-handed pitcher has been placed on the 10-day disabled list and will receive "treatment and rest." The Rangers have not put a timetable on his return. Perez injured his elbow after falling when startled by a bull on his ranch in Venezuela, and his quick recovery was not all that it seemed. Perez has been bad this season with a 9.67 ERA in 22 1/3 innings. Even when he is at his best, Perez has very little strikeout upside, which limits his fantasy value, and he should be dropped in all leagues at this point.--Ben Rolfe

3 months agoFree-agent left-hander Martin Perez and the Chicago White Sox agreed to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. The White Sox have most likely given Perez just a one-year deal. The 33-year-old southpaw will head to the American League after pitching for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres in 2024, where he went a combined 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA (4.90 FIP), a 1.48 WHIP and a 107:49 K:BB in 135 innings over his 26 starts. Given the rebuilding White Sox's lack of reliable starting option entering the 2025 campaign, the veteran Perez is likely to open the year in the starting rotation, making him a low-upside streaming option in deeper fantasy formats. The Venezuelan hurler is a soft-tosser that won't rack up many strikeouts and won't have much upside at all pitching for the worst team in baseball. UPDATE: Perez signed a one-year deal worth $5 million.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

6 months agoSan Diego Padres starting pitcher Martin Perez is on the NLDS roster after being left off the Wild Card roster last week. Perez is rejoining the roster because Joe Musgrove (elbow) is set to undergo Tommy John surgery. As a result, the Padres will enter the NLDS with four potential starters, including Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish, Michael King, and Perez. Since joining San Diego at the trade deadline, the southpaw has held a modest 3.46 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP, with a 17:44 BB:K ratio across 52 frames. However, he struggled with Pittsburgh in the first half, holding a hefty 5.20 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. Perez could start Game 4, but it is best to leave him off your DFS lineup as he sits with an underwhelming 18.1% K rate and a poor 41.5% hard-hit rate.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

7 months agoSan Diego Padres starting pitcher Martin Perez (paternity) was activated off the paternity list on Saturday afternoon. In a corresponding move, the Padres optioned left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso. The 33-year-old is now scheduled to make his next start on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. Since joining the Padres in late July, Perez has looked quite solid, as he has posted a 2.84 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP across 38 frames. Earlier this summer in the Steel City, Perez held a 5.20 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP across 83 innings. Perez should continue to have a stable position in the Padres rotation going forward and could be worth streaming in deeper leagues in favorable matchups despite his modest strikeout potential.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

7 months agoSan Diego Padres starting pitcher Martin Perez has been placed on the paternity leave list on Wednesday. The left-hander can miss up to three games as he spends time with his family. The assumption is that Perez will be back in time to take the mound for his scheduled start on Friday. He has been solid since joining the Padres roster. Perez has a 2.84 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across seven starts in San Diego. He'll be a decent streaming option assuming he's back in time to make his next start.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller
