Daniel Murphy Playing Extended Spring Training Games
7 years agoWashington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy (knee) is playing in his first games since microfracture surgery on his right knee in the offseason. The veteran hitter is playing in extended spring training games in West Palm Beach, Florida, which manager Dave Martinez notes is perfect because the weather is so nice. Murphy had five at-bats on Tuesday and fielded about 35 grounders. Martinez also left open the possibility that if Murphy continues to progress well, he will skip a minor league assignment and jump right back in with the Nationals. Murphy is in the final year of his contract with the Nationals and remains one of the game's elite hitters. But injuries, specifically to his legs and back, have kept him from playing a full season for a while. Owners who have held onto him this long may want to check the market just as he's ready to return.
