Denard Span Is Tampa Bay Rays Opening Game Hero
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Denard Span was the hero of the first game of the regular season Thursday versus Boston. He came up with the bases loaded in the eighth inning with Tampa Bay losing 4-2. He would hit a bases-clearing triple to give them the lead before getting knocked in by the next hitter to provide the final run of the game. The reports say he will hit leadoff on occasion but he still produced out of the sixth slot Thursday. Span is coming off a 2017 season where he batted .272 with 12 home runs and 12 steals. He rarely strikes out, having not topped 79 strikeouts in a season over the past eight seasons. Span is one of four outfielders contending for three outfield spots as well as his chances to be the designated hitter. As long as he gets to 450 plate appearances, he should serve as a steady and safe fourth or fifth outfielder in a 12-team mixed league.
