Adam Wainwright Hits DL, Jack Flaherty Takes Rotation Spot
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (hamstring) will start the 2018 season on the DL, and Jack Flaherty will slot in as the team's fifth starter. Wainwright strained his hamstring on Saturday running drills in the exact same manner that injured reliever Luke Gregerson on Friday. Flaherty makes for an interesting flyer. As Eno Sarris points out, Flaherty's 87 sliders after the All-Star break last season had a whiff rate of 28.7 percent. That made it more devastating than Clayton Kershaw's. While he pitched a ho-hum 4.85 ERA in spring training, he punched out 20 batters in 13 innings. He's worth a late-round or waiver wire pick across all formats, especially in leagues that count wins with the Cardinals hitting behind him.
