Hyun-Jin Ryu Named As Fifth Starter
7 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was officially named as the team's fifth starter on Sunday. He'll make his regular season debut in the second series of the year against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Despite giving up five runs on seven hits in three innings recently against the Cubs, the club likes the strides that Ryu has made all spring. He's much healthier than this time last year, which is significant given the season and a half that he lost to injury a few years ago, and his fastball is up to 93 mph. He's also working on increasing the spin rate on his curve. Given the strikeout potential and team behind him, he makes a pretty good late-round flyer. The Dodgers like to manipulate the disabled list to keep their starters fresh, so the likelihood of Ryu pitching more than 130 innings is small.
