Boston Bruins forward David Backes (thigh) was involved in a scrum at the end of the first period against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. An errant skate appeared to cut an unprotected portion of his thigh, causing him to exit the game to receive stitches, and he did not return. Backes also scored a power-play goal before leaving the game with the leg laceration. Saturday marked Backes’ first game since being moved up to Boston’s top line with forwards David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand, as center Patrice Bergeron (foot) recovers from injury. Backes’ status was unclear after the game, as the Bruins simply stated that Backes was “resting” and would not return to Saturday’s game. Expect an update on his condition before the Bruins return to action on Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.--Alex McKenzie
