Clayton Richard Expected To Start Opening Day
7 years agoSan Diego Padres starting pitcher Clayton Richard turned in his best spring tune-up on Friday, hurling four innings of shutout ball with one strikeout. Although Padres manager Andy Green wouldn't confirm, the calendar aligns Friday's start with Opening Day. Richard is widely expected to get the ball against the Milwaukee Brewers to start the season. Richard tallied an ordinary 4.79 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 6.89 K/9 in 2017 but was a workhorse, logging 197 1/3 innings in 32 starts. Along with Richard, pitcher Bryan Mitchell is the only other set starter. The final three rotation spots are up for grabs between pitchers Dinelson Lamet, Luis Perdomo, Tyson Ross, Chris Young, Robbie Erlin, Jordan Lyles and Matt Strahm.
