Chris Sale's Offseason Plan Becoming More Clear
7 years agoBoston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale has had an offseason plan that is geared more towards being successful throughout the season and through the postseason. We have known about the existence of a plan all offseason. Scott Lauber of ESPN has exposed a little more of what the plan actually entails. The lesson thus far is less is more. The plan was built by new pitching coach Dana LeVangie and is based on efficiency, focusing on a gradual buildup. It includes daily workouts in the weight room with strength coach Kiyoshi Momose and on a mound with LeVangie. These workouts would now have a concentrated purpose and would require less idle time at the ballpark. Sale and other pitchers will receive the workouts the day prior via texts. This way they can come in prepared mentally and physically to give their best and get out. This plan of increasing the physical baseline will likely lead to another dominant season from the Red Sox ace. In 2017, Sale had a 2.90 ERA and a remarkable 308 strikeouts. However, his August and September ERAs were 4.38 and 3.72, respectively. This type of initiative and discipline for continual self-improvement is what continues to put him among the elite starting pitchers. This is also why you should continue to draft him no later than the second round.
