Dolphins Could Restructure Ryan Tannehill's Contract
7 years agoThe Miami Dolphins, who must get creative to generate more salary cap space this offseason, could restructure quarterback Ryan Tannehill's contract and save $11.123 million in cap space. It would involve turning his base salary into a signing bonus, which would then be prorated over the final two years of his deal. Miami could do something similar with wide receiver Kenny Stills and save $4.79 million. The Dolphins could wipe up to $31 million in cap costs off the books in 2018 by restructuring deals with certain players. Tannehill missed all of 2017 with a knee injury, but he should be ready to go for Week 1 of the 2018 season. While he had a career-high 67.1 completion percentage in 2016 under head coach Adam Gase, Tannehill also posted a career-low 2,995 yards passing with only 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. With the team likely to part ways with wideout Jarvis Landry, who led the league in receptions last year, the path to rack up better numbers through the air might be slim pickings for Tannehill.
