ANALYSIS: Danny Valencia has primarily served as a platoon bat in his career, hitting against left-handers and sitting on the bench against right-handers. This year was expected to be more of the same, but early season ineffectiveness from rookie first baseman Dan Vogelbach thrust Valencia into an everyday role at 1B, and he has performed well. There has been a slight dip in his overall slash line, but his .270/.328/.427 line on the year is serviceable, especially when it comes with 11 home runs, 49 RBI and 42 runs scored through the first 90 games of the year.
Valencia is doing his trademark damage against left-handers, hitting .307/.393/.533 with four home runs in 75 at-bats on the year. His .259/.307/.396 line against right-handers is the impressive part, making Valencia worth more than just a roster spot in AL-only formats and as a DFS play against left-handers. With the Mariners still in the hunt, Valencia should get the majority of at-bats at first base going forward, and there is no reason to expect he won't hit eight or ten more home runs with a respectable slash line and plenty of RBI, hitting behind Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager.
Those in 12-team leagues and beyond should snap Valencia up, his spot in the order every day will make him a playable CIF option for the rest of the season.
