In the spirit of Valentine's Day, we're going to try to show the love this week.
No negativity here. Just the positives, please. Like the exchanging of cards in grade school, when all the kids make out Valentines for all their classmates--even the dorks--we're just gonna ladle out the mush.
So, with that in mind, here are our CBB rankings for the week of February 13th (won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Basketball (CBB) Rankings
1. Gonzaga, (26-0)
Hey! We love undefeated teams. We love mid-majors. We love conferences with, maybe, two good teams. Ooops. Well, we love Nigel Williams-Goss (15.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 4.6 APG).
2. Villanova, (24-2)
We've always loved Villanova, even when they made us look like fools by winning it all last season, after our pick--Kansas--flubbed. We love looking foolish. Good thing, too, since we often do. Jalen Brunson (14.2 PPG, 4.3 APG) stole our hearts a long time ago.
3. Kansas, (22-3)
We've shown the love to Frank Mason III (20.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.9 APG), and we know we're not alone. We'd really love it if the Jayhawks could win it all--if only to make us look smart for having them in the top four all of this season and last. We'd love looking smart, too--we think.
4. Baylor, (22-3)
We love the Big 12. And we love to say that. We also love Manu Lecomte (12.6 PPG, 4.2 APG).
5. Oregon, (22-4)
We love the Ducks--if they can stay healthy. If there has been an advantage to Dillon Brooks' injury woes this season (he's only missed four games but has not been 100 percent for several others) it's that Oregon has found new depth on its roster. We love depth.
6. Arizona, (23-3)
We love teams that finish strong, and the Wildcats are doing just that. Lauri Markkanen (15.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG) is a lovely player, too.
7. UCLA, (23-3)
In fairness, we've loved UCLA all season. Well, almost all season. And we love pure points guard like Lonzo Ball (15-plus PPG, 7-plus APG).
8. North Carolina, (21-5)
No shame in getting, uh, tripped up at Duke. Sorry. We love tripping... But we also love consistency. And UNC hasn't quite achieved that this season, although Justin Jackson 18.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG) certainly has.
9. Kentucky, (20-5)
Our on-again, off-again love affair with UK is on again, thanks Wildcats wins over LSU and 'Bama, and the struggles of Cincy, Wisconsin and others. Malik Monk is still scoring (21.2 PPG) but his other numbers are down. Freshman wall, perhaps?
10. West Virginia (20-5)
We don't love boring basketball. So we don't really love the Mountaineers (sorry). But defense wins championships, right? No, we're not saying Bob Huggins' team will win it all, but players who do everything, like Jevon Carter (11.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.3 APG and 2.9 SPG), deserve the March spotlight.
