NBA Waiver Wire: Wings (SG/SF, SF, SF/PF) for Week 12

Surfing the waiver wire in a deep league is a tricky business. Luckily, if you have a player who didn't meet your expectations it's a low-risk high-reward business. Hitting a home run with a free agent can help your team contend more seriously for the Fantasy Championship.

If you need help on the wing, we will be looking into some of players who should still be available in plenty of leagues and will have the opportunity and capability to outperform current overall expectations. Here we go, my Week 12 waiver wire pickups for the wing spots.

Standard League Waiver Wire Wing Adds

James Johnson, SF/PF, MIA (53% owned)

First, we talked about James Johnson two weeks ago when he was owned in only 24% of the leagues. If you picked him up then, you must be feeling pretty good about your decision right now. Then we mentioned him again last week in the "Miami Holiday Special." I might be a bit pushy on Johnson right now, but here is why.

The main reason for Johnson's surge is the injury bug that's hit the Heat. Well since last week, even more things went his way. First of all, his rival for minutes at the SF/PF spot, Justice Winslow is out for the season following his shoulder surgery. Furthermore, Josh Richardson was in a walking boot on Jan. 9 and even though reports say there is no permanent damage on his left foot, he is still expected to miss at least the next couple of games. Although Richardson's injury doesn't necessarily mean more minutes for Johnson, Winslow's certainly does.

Since Winslow was shut down for the season, Johnson played four games and averaged 30 minutes per game compared to 25 minutes until then. In those four, Johnson played really well scoring 16.5 points with 3.0 threes on 50.0% from the field and 85.7% from the line, adding 6.0 boards, 3.3 dimes, 1.0 steal, 1.5 block and 3.0 turnovers. Now apart from the turnovers, those are some insane numbers for a guy who's been a backup and owned in less then a quarter of the leagues just two weeks ago!

With Winslow out and Miami having poor luck with injuries this season, Johnson is likely to continue to get the minutes he is getting right now. If his production can stay even remotely similar to what he is doing right now, he will be worth owning in most leagues. In the odd chance, he is still available in your league, give him a go.

Bojan Bogdanovic, SG/SF, BKN (46% owned)

Bojan Bogdanovic is a gifted shooter who plays both SG and SF positions. He can score in bunches and is a constant three point threat for the opposition defenses. Unfortunately, from a fantasy perspective, he isn't much more than a points and threes specialist with relatively good percentages and low turnovers. That makes him more suitable for points leagues.

So far this season he has averaged 14.0 PTS with 1.8 3PM on 44.3 FG% and 85.5 FT%, 3.2 REB, 1.6 AST, 0.4 STL, 0.1 BLK and 1.3 TO in 27 minutes per game. Now for a guy who shots 4.9 three-pointers a game, 44.3% from the field is decent. High percentage free throw shooting on 3.1 attempts this season is helpful and a couple of rebounds from the SG/SF spot do come in handy. But if you are to pick Bogdanovic up from the waiver wire it's going to be because of his scoring and 3-point shooting.

It has to be said Jeremy Lin has missed two thirds of the season with injuries but his return shouldn't take minutes away from Bojan, and his presence might even open up more shots for him. Furthermore, Brooklyn have three four-game weeks in a row from Week 20 to Week 22 when most fantasy playoffs take place. It's also worth mentioning that Bogdanovic hasn't missed a game yet this season (he did have a maintenance day with only 12 minutes on Jan. 5 against the Pacers though) and has missed a total of only five games in his previous two seasons in the NBA.

So if points, threes, efficiency and consistency are high on your team's priority list Bojan Bogdanovic is your guy!

Other options: Jamal Crawford, SG/SF, LAC (44% owned) and Brandon Ingram, SF, LAL (46% owned)

Deep League Waiver Wire Wing Adds

Tim Hardaway Jr., SG/SF, ATL (26% owned)

The Hawks are in rebuild mode. Jeff Teague was moved in the offseason and now Kyle Korver has been traded to Cleveland. Although Atlanta did get Mike Dunleavy back in the trade, a player who plays a similar role as Korver, it's difficult to imagine Dunleavy having as much minutes or shots as Korver. This should open up more opportunities for Tim Hardaway Jr. to become fantasy relevant.

His recent play suggests he will take advantage of the chance he is given. In his previous four games, Hardaway Jr. has averaged 19.3 PTS with 4.3 3PM on 59.6 FG% and 66.7 FT%, 3.8 REB, 1.5 AST, 0.3 STL, no blocks and 1.3 TO in 27 minutes a night. Holy cow! That is some crazy shooting! Of course, it's not expected of him to keep up this kind of production the rest of the way, but with increased minutes following Korver's departure, he could put up solid lines worthy of a roster spot in deeper leagues.

Korver and Teague are already gone, and there are rumors going around that the Hawks will try to deal Paul Millsap and Thabo Sefolosha before the deadline. A potential Sefolosha trade would open up even more room and court time for Hardaway and Millsap leaving would leave a lot of usage and shots to go around. The situation in Atlanta is putting Hardaway in a spot where he can improve and show himself worthy of a spot in the Hawks' rebuilding process. How big of a role and how much fantasy impact he will have is up to him.

Other options: P.J. Tucker, SG/SF, PHO (9% owned) and Andre Roberson, SG/SF, OKC (9% owned)
