Analysis: After being picked up off of the waivers before the season, Dan Straily has been an incredibly pleasant surprise for the Cincinnati Reds. In 139.1 IP this season he has a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a career-low mark of 3.3 BB/9. After struggling in the month of June with a 6.43 ERA, Straily has been on fire. In five July starts he held a 2.41 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 2.67 BB/9. Subsequently; so far in three August starts he has a 3.12 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a very low 0.52 BB/9. Straily has also demonstrated solid durability as well as his improved command by pitching 51 innings in his last eight outings for an average of 6.4 IP per start. At the age of 27, it may be strange to think about Straily being the same age as Reds players like Tony Cingrani, but he is having a marvelous season as a starter and has demonstrated plenty of improvement. Ride his durability and improved command into the sunset.
