Analysis: Not much has gone right for the Angels this year, especially from the mound. At least Matt Shoemaker is doing his part to make up for the declining performance of Jered Weaver and Hector Santiago and the injuries to Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs, and Andrew Heaney. In 16 starts this year, he has a 4.40 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 9.1 K/9, 1.96 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9.
His season totals are pretty good, but his monthly splits are day and night. He had a bad first month with a 9.15 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in five starts. He also only struck out 7.0/9, and produced an ugly 4.4 BB/9 and 2.6 HR/9. In his ten starts in May and June, Shoemaker was a dominant force. He had a 2.56 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 10.0 K/9, and a laser-focused 1.08 BB/9. He had a rough first start in July, but that shouldn't spook you out of trusting his last two months of pitching.
