Analysis: It is a well known fact that the Cincinnati bullpen is pretty much the worst relief system in the MLB. It may also be well known that the Reds named Tony Cingrani the official closer. That may not mean much in terms of high volume saves given the Reds current weight in the loss column, but it does mean that Cingrani will be the one earning the saves that come around, and he doesn't deserve the type of criticism the rest of the bullpen has received. He has a 3.48 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. This year Cingrani has limited the amount of batters he walks (although 5.7 per 9 is still a lot) and he has also maintained a high K rate with 8.7 K/9.
Cingrani's HR percentage allowed is at just 2.3% and he has been surprisingly more effective when pitching in Great American Ballpark with a 2.70 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. In the season's first month, Cingrani had a 3.72 ERA and 1.55 WHIP, but this month he has a much more solid 3.27 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. Cingrani is going to get the save opportunities in Cincy, and he is steadily becoming more equipped for the role.
