At the age of 35 and having played for five different teams, we can file Rich Hill under the “Grizzled Veteran” category. In the early days of Hill’s career, we got a good look at what he could do on the bump while making 57 starts with the Chicago Cubs. He dazzled fans with an Opening Day performance in 2007 where he allowed one hit and one run over seven IP.
Control issues throughout the 2007 season would land Rich Hill in baseball purgatory, bouncing back and forth from various teams and their respective farm clubs. The 2015 season was the first since AAA ball with the Red Sox that Hill started a game. He only made four starts but we saw the same magic he brought to the mound on Opening Day of 2007. He compiled a 1.55 ERA with a 0.66 WHIP, 11.17 K/9, a 1.55 BB/9, and even a complete game victory over the Baltimore Orioles in September.
Hill is slated to be fourth in this year’s rotation for the Oakland Athletics. He is a fly ball pitcher moving to the most expansive home ballpark of his entire career. Throw in his experience, and Rich Hill makes for an attractive late-round steal. At the very least, Rich Hill is a name to keep an eye on for all you SP streamers out there.
