After his first season with the Chicago Cubs, 32-year-old catcher Miguel Montero enters the 2016 campaign as the hitter with arguably the least fantasy value in the lineup. That’s certainly not a knock on the Venezuelan veteran, it’s simply a matter of this lineup's strength, which will relegate him to the bottom third of the order. One thing for fantasy baseball owners to consider when thinking of drafting him will be the question of playing time. Last year, he played in only 113 games, sharing the position with David Ross and Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber will probably be settling into a starting outfield spot, which will definitely help Montero’s fantasy value. Last year, even while missing 49 games, he hit a respectable 15 HR, good for eighth in the league amongst catchers. Can he raise that into the upper teens? For the past three seasons, his HR totals have jumped by two each year, so it’s a definite possibility. You’ve got to imagine that in certain spots there will be intentional walks in front of him, so the RBI chances will be there. Sure, he won’t hit for terrific average, but if you’re looking at Montero, you’re considering him as a backup, not an everyday player. His numbers won’t blow you away, but as a second catcher, he’ll provide solid value.
