Mark Canha’s career has taken a lot of twists and turns. The Florida Marlins selected the former UC Berkley Golden Bear in the seventh round of the 2010 Junior Amateur Draft. In 2014, the Colorado Rockies swiped Canha from the Marlins in the Rule 5 draft and just moments later, traded him to the Oakland Athletics.
The 2015 season would be Canha’s first shot at Major League action and he sure made the most of it. Splitting time between OF, 1B, and even one game at 3B, Canha played 124 games and was quite productive given his experience level. An OPS of .741 with 16 homers and 70 RBI is nothing to sneeze at for a rookie, and proves that the power is there.
The Oakland Athletics believe that Canha has what it takes to hit in the middle of the lineup and use his power profile to drive in runs. His 2015 production far overshadowed that of his 1B counterparts, Billy Butler and Ike Davis, so playing time is not really a question. In a pool of aging 1B’s, Canha stands out as an attractive middle-of-the-road option. He could be just what the Athletics need, and fantasy owners should take note.
