Week 10 Quarterback (QB) Rankings Analysis
By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)
This week features two second-year QBs in the top ten in Blake Bortles and Derek Carr. Bortles in particular has a nice matchup against the Ravens. With or without the questionable Allen Hurns he should put up big numbers this week. Derek Carr’s matchup is tougher but my goodness, the guy has plowed through similarly tough matchups against the Jets and Steelers in the last two weeks. Both are very good starts.
I really want to like Jameis Winston but the more I think about it, the more I believe his ceiling will be very limited this week. The Bucs have a clear game plan in games where they have a lead or they are very close. The run the ball a ton and limit the amount of passes Jameis makes. It’s a smart thing to do with a young QB but it’s bad for fantasy.
Now Jameis does have a rushing touchdown in two of their three wins so it doesn’t exactly reflect in his fantasy points. As a thrower though he averages just under 200 pass yards with no more than 1 pass touchdown. I think there is a very good chance the Bucs beat the Romo-less Cowboys, and the even line reflects that. That means Winston won’t do a whole lot here. I have him at QB20 after initially having him quite a bit higher.
One guy that will benefit from the opposite situation is Brian Hoyer. His Texans are massive underdogs and he’ll be throwing a ton. As he has done in the past, it might be a rough first half. Come garbage time things will different. Expect 15 targets to Hopkins while Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts rack up some yardage as well. Hoyer will almost certainly throw at least 40 times which is enough to put up the points as a pretty good QB2 this week!
In the preseason one of my favorite Carson Palmer stats was to write about how well he played over his previous 16 games... if you removed the two Seahawks games (2 TD, 6 INTS) because well, “Nobody is playing Palmer vs the Seahawks if they have anything close to a viable alternative.” It turns out Palmer has played so well that it is up for discussion to many.
The Seahawks allow the third fewest points to opposing QBs and it has been even better in three home games. The only QB to put up fantasy numbers on the Seahawks at home was Cam Newton and that took 30 rush yards and a rush TD. Needless to say, Palmer won’t be doing that. I have him at QB18.
