A solid WR2 in every season of his career, this season might be the most frustrating yet for Torrey Smith's fantasy owners. Smith has been disappointing except for two big games in Week 2 and Week 6. His two touchdown catches (75 and 76 yard bombs) account for almost half of Smith's receiving yards.
Smith has only 14 catches on 25 targets. While the deep-threat is always there, it looks like Smith won't be a big enough part of the 49ers offense to warrant starting fantasy consideration. San Francisco’s upcoming games don't offer much relief, with another game against Seattle and a bye coming up in the next five weeks.
It may be tempting to look at Smith's performance in Week 6 and think that he has turned a corner. But at this point he should only be an emergency option outside of the deepest leagues. Looking back at Smith's career, the only time he caught more than 50 percent of his targets was his rookie season.
This season he is above that number, however the decrease in targets is troublesome. One of the best assets to have in fantasy football is consistent production, and Smith can really harm your team by putting up zero points.
If you can use Week 6's shiny performance to trade Smith, who is still owned in 57 percent of ESPN leagues, I would take that opportunity. If he is unowned in your league, look elsewhere. There are likely better targets who won’t make you want to pull your dreads out.
