Span (Back) Resumes Light Workouts: Hasn't Played Since Early July

Denard Span will resume light workouts on Monday as he continues to battle back from back issues, according to The Washington Post.

The Washington Nationals outfielder took a cortisone injection in his back two weeks ago after being placed on the DL in early July. He has been resting ever since he received the shot.

“I think once we start progressing with the hitting and the sprinting and just going at a level where I need to play at and seeing how my body recovers,” Span told The Washington Post. “Swinging hard and sprinting hard, then seeing how I feel the next day. See if my back locks up on me again, if I still have these aches and pains. I think if I can do those things and I feel good, then I’m ready to come back.”

Span’s return is still unknown. The 31-year-old could help a Nationals team that has lost first place to the New York Mets. He has the ability to get on base frequently while swiping a ton of bases. In 2015, Span has a .304 BA with 5 HR, 22 RBI and 11 SB. Unfortunately for him, he’s only played in 59 games this season. Throughout his eight-year career, Span has a .287 BA with an average of 26 stolen bases over 162 games.

The injury-plagued season is potentially devastating for Span, who is in the last year of an extremely team-friendly contract. If he fails to produce by the end of the year, the veteran could lose out on a lot of money for his next deal.
