Mets Trade For Carlos Gomez Falls Apart

Initially it was reported that the Milwaukee Brewers had agreed to a deal to trade Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets, in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. But it was later reported that the deal was not happening.

There are a few rumors as to why the deal fell apart, ranging from financial issues, to medical issues and concerns over the health of Carlos Gomez and his hip. As of now, the details have not been fully confirmed, but what we do know is that the trade will not happen.

Gomez, 29, was the key component in the trade for the Mets. He has a .266 BA with 8 HR and 43 RBI in 73 games this season. The centerfielder has dealt with a few injuries this year, but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the top all-around outfielders in MLB. It seems that he is still on the trading block, but potential injury concerns may be a factor now for the Brewers trying to move him.

Gomez’s rookie season was with the Mets before he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in the deal to land Johan Santana. He didn’t make a name for himself until he landed in Milwaukee in 2010. He made two straight All-Star teams and won a Gold Glove. He’s one of the rare players that can hit for average, power and steal bases while playing a great outfield.

Wheeler, 25, was the big name in the deal that saw the Mets trade Carlos Beltran to the San Francisco Giants. In only two MLB seasons, the right-hander has a 3.50 ERA. He hurt his elbow during Spring Training and had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Wheeler won’t back until the middle of the 2016 season.

Flores, 23, is a young infielder that has showed at times that he could hit at the MLB level. He has a .249 BA this season with 10 HR and 40 RBI. He needs to improve his defense, but he could get more of a chance to play with another team than he’s had of late with the Mets.

It's speculated that the Mets will still try and land a big bat before the trade deadline ends, and the Wheeler and Flores would be the main components of any deal. Stay tunes for further news over the next two days.
