Casey McGehee has accepted being sent down to Triple-A Sacramento by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
The defending World Series champions designated McGehee, 32, for assignment on Sunday. The third basemen had the option to become a free agent, but he would have been forfeiting what's left of his $4.8 million salary for 2015. Instead, the struggling free agent signing during this past offseason has accepted the demotion and will hope to prove himself in the minors before coming back up.
For the 2015 season, McGehee has a .200 BA with only two homers and nine RBI. Last season, he had a .287 BA with a .712 SLG and 76 RBI with the Miami Marlins. His solid season was a reason the Giants went out and signed him during the offseason as the replacement for Pablo Sandoval, who signed with the Boston Red Sox.
For the time being, Matt Duffy will get most of the starts at third base for San Fran. Duffy has a .302 BA, two homers and 20 RBI this season.
